Three Factors to Consider Before Whitening Skin

Have you recently started noticing dark patches or spots on your skin? Or maybe an increase in freckles? Has it started bothering you and now you are starting to consider whether or not you should try a whitening skin product or regime? If this sounds like you, then please take the next few minutes to read this article. There are important factors that need to be considered before starting any whitening skin regime.

1. Know the Source and Eliminate It

It is extremely important that you first identify the source of the concern. Are the freckles or dark spots due to prolonged sun exposure? Is it due to aging? Or maybe a hormonal imbalance? By determining the cause you can begin to take preventative measures to minimize further damage. For example, if your dark spots are because of sun damage then avoiding the sun or wearing a high level of SPF would be recommended.

If on the other hand, the basis of the problem is related to a hormonal irregularity you would need to consult with your doctor. For example, birth control pills can bring on dark patches in some people. It is therefore, recommended that you stop using this form of contraception before starting a whitening skin regime. Prolonged contact with the causative agent will negatively impact your results.

2. Research the Alternatives

There are lots of different whitening skin options. The most popular include creams and lotions, laser therapy, chemical peels, and even prescription drugs. These alternatives can often produce varied results, short term solutions that just end up making the problem worse, or even reactions like irritation, sensitivity, or full blown allergic responses. Ideally, you would want a solution that is natural, permanent, and fast acting; not to mention cost friendly. Take the time to research the alternatives and weigh out the pros and cons.

3. Always Rule Out Cancer

Changes to skin pigmentation can be due to various skin related cancers. For this reason, it is important that you truly know the root cause of your dark patches or spots. Medical doctors and dermatologists begin their assessment by using a tool that follows the acronym ABCDE. This tool can be used in early detection of melanomas. However, it can also be used by you at home. If you see any of these factors, or answer 'yes' to any of the questions, consult with your doctor and have them assess and monitor the areas of concern.

The acronym is as follows:

A = Asymmetry (Does one half look different than the other?)

B = Borders (Does the area have irregular borders?)

C = Color (Is the color varied in areas?)

D = Diameter (Is the size larger than 6 millimeters?)

E = Evolution or Elevation (Has the area changed over time? and is the

area elevated?)

Knowing the root cause of your dark patches or spots should be your first priority. This will directly impact on the next decision that you make, whether to consult with a doctor or to find a way to remove the source. Secondly, don't forget to research all of your options. Weigh the pros and cons and find the alternative that best suits your needs. And lastly, make sure to rule out cancers before starting any whitening skin regime.
