Australia is often called "The Lucky Country" - it is - from the Bush to the Ocean it's an incredible Country. It has vast mineral wealth but also its unique bush is a storehouse of foods or 'tucker'. The Australian Aborigine has used the Australian Bush for centuries for shelter and food and bush medicine.
The shift to natural products includes a high demand for skin care to rely less on chemicals and synthetic ingredients and more on natural, simple and safe ingredients. Australia also has a wealth of these in the form of mineral clays to oils to botanicals etc.
As Australians we should 'shop in our own backyard' and these are some of the 'goodies' from the unique Australian Bush we can use for better looking and better functioning skin.
The essential oils from our native trees have proven to be outstanding in their anti-microbial, antifungal, antiseptic and antiviral properties just to name a few. In general, the aromatic fragrances from many Australian essential oils are uplifting, mind clearing and invigorating. For example:-
Lemon Myrtle - has a fresh lemon fragrance - slows down the growth of various organisms on the skin and therefore maintains circulation and a healthy skin.
Teatree - very versatile for healing. The Australian Aborigine would use the bark to wrap around sores and cuts until healed.
Peppermint Gum - strong fresh aroma and alleviates tiredness - good for oily skin.
Eucalyptus Oil - This fragrance is bright and crisp. Good for painful joints and muscles and for treating coughs colds flu and bronchitis. Once applied to the skin, ozone is formed and hence it is good for would healing, ulcers, burns, cuts and sores. It can also be used to treat insect bites and stings.
Macadamia Nut Oil - Rich in Vitamins A and E to soothe and relax the skin. This oil resembles our own skin sebum so it is absorbed very easily by the skin and helps the cells to rejuvenate. It prevents sunburns and also helps the skin retain its moisture and therefore good for old and dry skin.
Emu Oil - This oil is gentle for all skin types and known as a muscle pain reliever due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Known also for its ability to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. This oil penetrates the skin very quickly and is a complete source of essential fatty acids which we cannot manufacture in our own bodies.
Nectars of the native trees e.g. Lillypilly, Grevillea, Paperbark, Bottlebrush and Wattle have high Vitamin C content and therefore very antioxidant - helping to mop up the free radicals and prevent damage to the skin's cell structure. The high level of Vitamin C also promotes collagen for increased suppleness and regeneration of the skin cells.
Fruit Puree e.g. Lillypilly Desert Lime and Mullumbimby Plum - fruit acids which are great for the skin - they loosen the glue between dead skin cells which fall away and leave the skin very smooth and soft. Rejuvenates and tones the skin and promotes youthful looking skin.
Bush (Sugarbag) Honey - its antimicrobial and antiseptic properties are stronger than the famed Manuka honey. The honey draws moisture to the skin and is good for healing skin tissue and for cell regeneration. Used by Aborigines as a tea for 'tummyache' and as a 'sweet' treat.
Clays - the minerals found in the clays have excellent cleansing, regeneration and healing properties. White clay is excellent for repairing damaged skin tissues, Green for opening pores and drawing out the toxins, Black has iron and oxygen properties for revitalising the skin, Red is ideal for sensitive and tired skin and White has a low ph balances and therefore good for sensitive and irritated skin.
When the ph balance of our skin is maintained at the correct level, this organ can do its job - provide a barrier for our bodies to either protect and defend us or absorb and accept substances which will benefit us. What we put on our skin not only affects how it performs but also can benefit the whole person.
