Human skin serves many purposes such as protection of underlying tissues, excretion and even attraction for mating. A person's skin often tells how healthy the person is overall. The majority of the appearance of the skin comes from the outermost layer: the epidermis. Below the epidermis lies the dermis, which is responsible for maintaining the elasticity of the skin. Protecting and caring for the epidermis ensures that your dermis stays healthy for longer and you get fewer wrinkles.
The epidermis is mainly made up of 4 types of cells:
keratinocytesmelanocyteslangerhans cellsmerkel cells
Out of these, the melanocytes are the most useful cells for protection. This is because melanocytes produce a dark pigment called melanin. This melanin protects underlying tissues from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Different people produce different amounts of melanin when exposed to the sun. Thus fairer people must apply more amounts of strong sunscreens to protect underlying layers of the skin from damage.
The dermis is mainly responsible for maintaining skin elasticity by utilizing dermal matrix components such as collagen and glycosaminoglycans. A damaged epidermis can result in reduced amounts of collagen in the skin, causing wrinkles. The glycosaminoglycans in the dermis are responsible for maintaining the water content within the skin. Hydrated, the skin appears full and without wrinkles. However, if the skin gets dry, it gets damaged. Dry skin occurs when there is excessive loss of moisture through the epidermis. This causes the water to rise up from the dermis into the epidermis, resulting in loss of elasticity causing wrinkles. The idea is therefore to keep the epidermis hydrated at all times. This does not mean that you stay in a swimming pool. It means you should use a good moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated. Application of moisturizer twice a day is known to decrease skin aging drastically.
One of the ideas which I give to my friends is to mix some sunscreen with the moisturizer and apply that before going out in the sun. This way you not only prevent the harmful UV rays of the sun from damaging your skin, but you also keep the skin appearing healthy and prevent damage due to dehydration.
If damage is already done, other methods of recovering lost dermal matrix components include the use of dermal fillers. However, such dermal fillers need to be injected or surgically inserted. Thus like other plastic surgery, this often has a risk and pain attached to it. It is therefore best to take precaution against aging by taking care of your epidermis.
